Obsessed: Knitwear Find For the Beach

Hello lovelies!

I apologize – I have spent the past two weeks hanging out with my mom, so the blog has largely been on vacation. We just got back from Rosemary Beach, where it was perfect weather other than one day of rain when we arrived. Actually I do not mind a little rain on vacation – it is the perfect excuse to curl up in my window nook with a good book. I am currently reading Uncovered by Leah Lax, and I cannot say enough good things about this book – run (do not walk) and get it immediately. Leah was my Table Talk speaker last week at the University of Houston Women’s Studies event. She is an amazing speaker and her life story is captivating – she had the entire table hanging on her every word. I do not want to give too much away, but I promise you will be just as enthralled as I am. I would love to hear everyone’s thoughts about the book if you get a chance to read it.

I just discovered this new knitwear collection by Zara and I am completely smitten. This skirt and sweater are extremely soft and light weight, making them the perfect pieces for a beach vacation. I intend to wear the skirt with a fitted T-shirt and a sweater to stay warm in restaurants at dinner (we tend to over air-condition everything here in Houston…) During the day with flip-flops it will be extremely casual, and at night I just need a pair of heels and some jewelry and I am ready to roll.

Here are some sneak peeks of the new house too….

Hunt for The Ultimate Affordable Summer Flat

Hello lovelies!

Hope everyone has had a good week! I have missed posts and I am so sorry! I have been super busy as one of the Co-Chairs for Table Talk for the University of Houston. I had a wonderful time yesterday, and I felt so excited to be surrounded by such an amazing group of women.

On a side note – my mom is in town and I thought you would appreciate a funny conversation we had regarding the U of H event.

Me: Mom please bring something to wear to the Table Talk event that I am Co-Chairing. It’s kind of a big thing – there will be 500 people there, many of them in business attire….

Mom: Ok

Me: (when she gets to town) Mom, what did you bring for the event tomorrow?

Mom: I brought this outfit (at which point she pulls out linen pants that would be appropriate for the beach…)

Me: Mom, I think maybe we should go shopping…(We found a lovely outfit – she looked great!)

At event:

Mom: Sweetie you should really tell me when you have something big going on…

Me: (internally) – I thought I did

I am sure you have heard but apparently Victoria Beckham (aka Posh Spice) has made the statement “I can’t do heels anymore” (insert crazy eye emoticon) – she has ditched her stilettos for flats (gulp). I am not quite at that point; however, I am going to Rosemary next week and I am on the hunt for affordable flats. I do not like to spend an exorbitant amount on flats because (not surprisingly) I only wear them occasionally and I like to change them often (to keep the excitement going). Here are my running favorites!

These remind me of the Valentino espadrilles but at one-third the price!

Maxi Dress Multi-Tasking for Vacation

Hello lovelies!

I hope everyone has been having a great week! Mr. Wonderful was watching Tiny Houses last night – has anyone seen it? The show is on HGTV and features exactly what the title implies – tiny homes that are anywhere from 200 to 500 sq. ft. (imagine my face wide-eyed and mouth open). As we were watching the show, Mr. Wonderful commented on how nice it would be to have a tiny home (low maintenance), how we could build one for retirement (oh my god, does he even know me?) – potentially out in the middle of nowhere (i.e. on a ranch.) That is when my hives started (I suspect this was all said to get a rise out of me…) The idea of a tiny home is wonderful – it is compact, environmentally friendly, everything has its place, there is no extra “stuff””. I aspire to live this way (I swear), but unfortunately de-cluttering is about as far as I can imagine right now. That is making me feel fabulous! I am currently working on the space above my garage to turn it into an office – the thought of having a separate work place is making me giddy with excitement.

I love maxi dresses – who doesn’t? Maxi’s are a simple and effortless outfit that you can throw on with flip-flops and a ponytail to run errands. I also love to pack maxi’s for trips – warm weather beach trips – it can be used as a beach cover up, or add heels to run out to brunch or dinner. I love multi-functional clothing. I picked this particular maxi because I love the color combination – blush pink, white and black. It is a great balance of soft and strong hues. I added a bit of “hard edge” to the dress with my vintage Hérmes bag and black Tory Burch wedges (I have worn this pair out completely and need to resole them or buy new ones), and my structured straw tote (thanks to Olive Design).

Spring Stripes: Maxi Dress & Sleeveless Shearling

Hello lovelies!

Hope everyone is having a good week! I find myself struggling during these in-between seasons – cold in the morning and warm by the afternoon. This particular morning a striped dress was the perfect palate to begin my spring look. There is something about spring and stripes (navy is even better) that just seem to fit together (like crazy and the current political candidates  – oops, did I say that out loud?).  The ideal solution to my seasonal problem is layers, and sleeveless layers are even better! I came across this peplum shearling vest and it was love at first glance (also seen styled here with a jumpsuit). I kept everything else simple and grabbed my Céline for a quick lunch at George’s.

Spring Thoughts: White Tunic Dress

Hello lovelies!

Hope everyone had a great weekend!  I embraced my inner Texas and went to the rodeo yesterday.  My kids had a blast – I came home and fell asleep at 5:30pm…..and proceeded to sleep until morning.  Thank you Mr. Wonderful for letting me take the evening and night off!

I love tassels – doesn’t everyone?  There is a huge resurgence in tassels this spring.  I see them everywhere from scarves to shoes (hello flats and sandals here).  I saw the tassels on this dress and was pretty sold.  That small detail elevates this from a boring white tunic to pure fun.  It is a heavy weight cotton, not see through at all (which can be a problem with white sometimes).  I threw on my favorite new necklace and hints of blue and I was ready for my beach stroll…..

Spring Fringe Trend

Hello lovelies!

I hope you have had a wonderful week! I want to discuss a fun trend that is still going strong this spring – fringe! This trend was introduced in the fall, but it really accelerated this spring and was seen all over Fashion Week – from Alexander Wang, Ralph Lauren, Givenchy and Marissa Webb to Banana Republic. Fringe epitomizes fun and whimsy, and my motto has always been fashion should be fun! What can be more fun than fringe? I started with this neutral blush pink midi fringe skirt, which is so flirty and feminine, and I added some structure with my current favorite jacket (also seen here and here). A mix of masculine and feminine is always modern. I added my neutral shoes to elongate my legs (I recommend picking a neutral that matches you skin tone – more peachy or beige depending on your undertones), grabbed a straw bag and off I went to dinner….

Also FYI – in case you are looking for new denim flares or skinnies – there is a friends and family event going on at J BRAND – 25% off with code JBFF25.  Click immediately before they run out of sizes!

How to Wear Sneakers Casual Chic

Hello lovelies!

I hope everyone had a good weekend!  I am writing this entry as I am watching the finale of Downton Abbey and I do appreciate the entire series being tied with a bow (even the bow has bows).  I feel very satisfied after six series.  No spoilers here…

I spent the weekend enjoying the gorgeous weather and very casual attire.  I found these kicks and my feet thank me every time I wear them.  They are comfy and chic – a hard combination to achieve!  It is a bit chilly in the morning –  so I grabbed my favorite current jacket.  I pretty much wear it everyday (seen here over a dress).  The key to wearing kicks is to wear a slightly dressed up outfit and then bring it back to earth with the sneakers.   High heels would have made this impossible to run around at the zoo…..you know I have tried that before and it didn’t go well.

Matching Trend Continues

Hello lovelies!

I hope you had a great week!  I have been continuing with my de-cluttering….next post will be the bedside drawers….who knew there was stuff from 6 years ago?  A bit scary….

I love a good matchy-matchy outfit and the lace and color of this top and skirt reminded me of the beautiful sky at Rosemary Beach!  The great thing about this outfit is that it can also be used as separates.  The top would look amazing with a pair of white jeans and some espadrilles.  The bottom would look great with a plain white-T and some silver flats.  The combinations are endless.  I added the fun new necklace, grabbed my beach tote and took a nice long walk on the beach.

Spring Trend: Blush & Shoulder-Less

Hello lovelies!

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!  I spent the weekend enjoying the sunshine and even went out to the Antique Fair off I-45.  It was a few hours spent in the sunshine hunting for treasures.  An ideal way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

The off the shoulder trend has morphed into a shoulder-less trend for Spring.  It is a very cool way to be sexy and show some skin but still retain modesty coverage.  I am a huge fan!  While at the beach I came across this blush pink shoulder less dress and had to have it.  It is very light weight and the pale pink is great for tanned skin.  It was a bit chilly so I threw on my current favorite jacket.  I have pretty much been living in this jacket since I picked it up.

I enjoy multi-use clothing and I can’t wait to use the dress as a cover up for the beach this summer (insert swoon emoticon).

University Of Houston – Table Talk

Hello lovelies!

Hope everyone had a nice and relaxing long weekend!  I have been busy gearing up for Table Talk!  It’s a great luncheon supporting the University of Houston Friends of Women’s Studies — it happens Thursday March 24th at the Hilton Americas downtown, and the invitation press deadline is January 25th. See more details below. Instead of one speaker at the front, we have 50 women from lots of industries and backgrounds, one at each table, leading the conversation.  Past conversationalists have included:  Annise Parker, Mayor of Houston, Tina Knowles, Designer, Cindy B. Taylor, CEO, Oil States Energy Services, Elizabeth Chiao, MD, MPH, Baylor College of Medicine, Dr. Ruth Simmons, President Emerita, Brown University, Jyoti Malhan, Principal, Baylor College of Medicine Academy at Ryan, Carmen Jordan, Houston Market President, IberiaBank, and Andrea Gardner, Longshorewoman, Port of Houston.  Who can resist the chance to be in a room with women with such great accomplishments.

You can go online and buy tickets directly to the event.  Here is the link: https://giving.uh.edu/wos/

Please commit at the highest level you can. All support goes to the UH WGSS program, where they work everyday at building a fair future for us and our kids!

If you’d like to split a table, just divide the table level by the number of guests, and guests can go online and pay their share directly.

Just have them give your name in the comments section and the office will put everyone who lists that name at the same table. The tenth guest is your conversationalist — soon after you register, you will get an email with the list of conversationalists and you send in your top ten choices. It’s a great list again this year — and the higher your table level, the better your odds for getting your first choice. To share a table with someone you don’t yet know, call the office to find a match.  I would love to see everyone come out and support this great cause!

If you want more details about the event please go online and check it out here!

Today I am experimenting with some tried and true favorites from my closet.
